It is truly amazing to me that we are already celebrating our first year in business! It is such an honor and a joy to be your local neighborhood bookstore. You, our friends and customers, make everyday special for us. Whether it is helping you find a long sought after book, assisting you in finding just the right gift for a friend or relative, having the required reading book that your child needed for class yesterday or countless other things, we are so happy to be here to serve you. It makes us so proud when you bring in your out of town friends and relatives to show them your bookstore. Without your loyal support, we would not be able to do this and for that, we thank you and sincerely hope that you can join us in this day of celebration. I also must take this opportunity to thank our marvelous staff who strive everyday to meet and exceed our goals and expectations. You are the very best!
Whats New in the Store
Well, this is a big topic! Curtis and I recently returned from Colorado Springs where we attended the Mountains and Plains Independent Booksellers Association conference. Besides gaining valuable information related to operating a bookstore, we met many authors and publishers who acquainted us with new book releases and book related products, many of which are now available in our store. There are just too many to list here, so you must come in and let us show you around!
I like to savor and relish in each holiday season and if you have been in the store lately, you have seen that we are very much into fall decorations and products. But, for those of you who are early bird Christmas shoppers, on the courtyard side of the store, we do have a subtle, but trendy display for holiday shopping. Well get into full swing with that as the season draws nearer, but for now, let me tell you about my favorite. We have papa bear from Gund! He reads the classic Christmas tale, Twas the Night Before Christmas in his wonderful papa bear voice. It is truly a great gift for young and old.
Remember the candle warmers that many of you have purchased from us for your homes, offices, and classrooms? Well, now we have the holiday lamp shades to fit them. You just simply remove the frosted shade and replace it with the holiday shade and viola! You have a new seasonal decoration! The Halloween shade and two styles of Christmas shades are now available.
Reading Tutoring
There are a few openings in my after school tutoring program. I tutor elementary aged children in reading using the guided reading levels and phonics program that is used by Katy ISD. I work with children on a one on one basis and taylor the sessions to meet the individual students needs. Call me (Sandi) at 281-693-READ (7323) for more information and to schedule a time for your child.
November Events
Author Presentations and book signings:
Wednesday, November 5th, 11:30 PM 1:30 PM Author and chef Clive Berkman will be here to sign and discuss his book Creating Empty Bottle Moments. As stated on the back of his book, Clive Berkman says that empty bottle moments are memories of wonderful times with our family and friends. These are the times that enrich our lives. He hopes this book helps you create these special times with those you love and with his fabulous sounding recipes, how could it not?
Saturday, November 22nd, 11:30 1:30 PM
John Takacs has written a page-turning thriller, The Take-Us, and will be signing on this day. His main character is John Christenson, a man with an idea, who modifies an automobile that generates its own motive power without the help of gasoline. John and an alluring TV reporter develop a plan to drive his invention from New York City to San Francisco and broadcast the trip on live national television. But this event has the potential to profoundly disrupt international power structures and end US enslavement to foreign oil. Needless to say, not everyone is happy about this. Forces much bigger than them countries and corporations who stand to lose everything in an oil-free world conspire to end the cross-country trip, and they wont think twice about taking lethal action when it comes to protecting their own billion-dollar interests. What a timely read focusing on one of our most pressing issues!
Saturday, November 22nd, 2:00 4:00 PM
Patricia Luce Chapman has written a very helpful book entitled Survivors Guide to Grief and she will sign and discuss her book with you. Her perspective on overcoming the grief of someone she loved dearly is embodied in her recommendation: Be like a starfish and grow new legs. This is a book best read now, before you find yourself in a grief scenario. You will tuck some of her advice away and if, God forbid, you lose a spouse, as she did or a family member or dear friend, you will recall some of her suggestions. The last chapter is especially helpful for anyone because it discusses how friends can help what you should and should not say or do in your attempt to help the survivor.
